Archiving Problem

The digital universe now needs the largest physical space to store the ever-increasing flood of information. According to IDC Research Report March 2007, the amount of digital information that was created, captured, and replicated in 2006 was estimated at 161 exabytes, or about 3 million times the information in all the books ever written. The amount of information created and copied in 2010 will surge more than sixfold to 988 exabytes, representing a compound annual growth rate of 57 per cent!

“The world in 2006 was enough to cover the space for 185 exabytes to store – it will have 601 exabytes in the year 2010.” (Source: IDC Research Report March 2007)

This information explosion is indelibly tied to the more than 10 thousand government regulations, which either require or encourage businesses to preserve many types of digital content for long periods of time. In some industries the regulations require the content to be preserved in an unaltered and easily authenticated form. In fact, the risks of not doing this can be severe.

Everyday the amount of online information grows exponentially. The business workplace is saturated with electronic data – email, legal documents, statistics, medical and satellite images. To stay competitive, businesses must have ready access to this data to go through it at a moment’s notice and extract its value. Moreover, government regulations require businesses to save sensitive data for years; archives must guarantee 24/7 access; high-end clear security and absolute authenticity. Traditional systems can store large amounts of data, they also have major drawbacks:

  1. Traditional systems are built with proprietary technology
  2. Over time, these systems become obsolete
  3. Maintenance and access become more and more problematic
  4. Traditional systems do not store metadata i.e. Data about data such as retention period or creation date
  5. As a result, file management and retrieval can be slow and require manual intervention
